The 2019 Block 26 displays fruity aromas of peach, apricot, green and red apple, nectarine, melon, pear and mandarin rind. There are delicate floral notes of honeysuckle, jasmine, rose water and white blossoms, and also a subtle minerality and slightly savoury hint.
The palate carries a nice medium weight and slightly oily texture, while still remaining bright and lively with well-balanced acidity. Flavours of lime, white peach, canned pineapple, Asian pear, apples and sweet grapefruit are subtly enhanced with notes of spice, minerality and a flinty note, giving the wine a sensation of mid-palate sweetness, while finishing dry and with great length.
The Fieldling blend was inspired by Block 26 at our Carr’s Landing vineyard, which is planted with Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. So as the saying goes, ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its individual parts’, we picked all three varieties from the block together and co-fermented them. The marriage of characters and textures is so much more integrated than had we fermented each variety separately and blended them together later. And what’s pretty cool is that you can still pick out the individual characters of each variety!
53% Pinot Gris, 32% Riesling and 15% Gewürztraminer.
Food-wise, think light seafood: lake trout, perch, prawns, ceviche. Try a pea and spot prawn risotto. Pair with beet, spinach or other light salads, and try adding some citrus or water chestnuts. For the carnivore in you, pick your pork! Or simply pick your favourite patio!
Bottled in February 2020.
